Free Landmark Lecture: Enslaved at the Georgetown Hotel

Enslaved at the Georgetown Hotel tells the story of three generations of one family who were held as slaves by the owner of the hotel, Eleanor Lang, until their emancipation in 1862 under the DC Compensated Emancipation Act. The Georgetown Hotel is now known as the City Tavern and is in one of the oldest Federal style buildings in D.C. The presenter, Yvette LaGonterie, retired from a lengthy federal career where she held senior positions in immigration, international affairs and homeland security. She is an avid family historian. Yvette also serves on the Board of Reading Partners DC and is a voluntary literacy tutor.
