Opening Reception for New Jewelers’Werk Exhibition

October 9, 2021 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Jewelers’Werk Galerie (3319 Cady’s Alley NW)

Jewelers’Werk Galerie presents Density, an exhibition of new work by artist-jeweler Joohee Han, from October 9th – October 29th. The opening reception will be on Saturday, October 9th from 11 am – 5 pm.

Part of her ongoing series of work titled Oval— alluding to the shape of an egg—this show includes necklaces and brooches made of crushed eggshells and silicone. Employing a labor-intensive and time-consuming process, Han first creates a negative mold lined with silicone and places the broken eggshells one by one, mosaic-like, onto the mold and then seals them with another layer of silicone. Once perfect, protective, yet fragile containers, the eggshells are transformed into flexible, partially translucent, unbreakable geometric shapes. These pieces serve as vehicles for Han’s exploration of the concepts of fragility, wearability, perfection, and transformation.

Originally from South Korea, Joohee Han is based in Munich, Germany, where she maintains her own studio. Han has a diploma from the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste ̈ (Academy of Fine Arts) in Munich, as well as a BFA and MFA in metal work and jewelry
from the College of Design, Kookmin University, in Seoul, South Korea. She has exhibited internationally and is represented in the U.S. exclusively by Jewelers’Werk Galerie.

The exhibition is open during gallery hours: Monday through Saturday 11 am – 5 pm or by appointment. Jewelers’Werk Galerie is located at 3319 Cady’s Alley, NW in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC. It is the longest-running and only contemporary art jewelry gallery of its kind in the greater Washington DC area, where owner and industry veteran Ellen Reiben shows precious and non-precious works by international artist-jewelers.
