We are Congo Art Exhibition & Live Art Event
We are Congo is an exciting, first of its kind, contemporary Congolese art exhibition being held at Concept 31/M (3077 M Street, NW) in Georgetown through January 15, 2022. The We are Congo art exhibition showcases original paintings for the first time ever in the United States by five young and talented Congolese artists: Jean-Claude Lofenia, Sam Ilus, JP Kiangu, Joël Lukombo & Chrispin Magalhaes. A “Live Art Event” with the five Congolese artists will be held on Saturday, January 8 from 3-6pm at Concept 31/M. This event will be an opportunity to meet the artists and learn about their techniques and inspiration while they work (live!) on original paintings. Participants can also tour the exhibition, have a drink, and enjoy Congolese music!
The We are Congo art exhibition exposes a side of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that many foreigners don’t know. This is a Congo bursting with a vibrant art scene, rich culture, and enormous talent. The paintings exhibited in “We are Congo” showcases this other side of the DRC. These exceptional works expose the daily life, history, and culture of the DRC and its teeming capital, Kinshasa. At times whimsical and surreal, deeply personal or with an ironic wink at the country’s often troubled history, the paintings by these five talented young Congolese artists embody “We are Congo.
