DC Emancipation Event in Georgetown
General • April 10, 2024
Join the Black Georgetown Foundation on Saturday, April 13 from 11 am – 12:30 pm to observe DC’s Emancipation Day. Meet at the Mount Zion and Female Union Band Society (FUBS) cemeteries (2501 Mill Rd NW) – the oldest Black cemeteries in DC that serve as the final resting place of enslaved, freed, and free Blacks – for a libation ceremony and reading of names accompanied by DC Strings. This will be followed by a conversation with Lisa Fager and Patrick Tisdale, caretakers who will share their knowledge of the ancestors of Mt Zion and FUBS. Feel free to bring a chair or blanket.
