Juneteenth Day of Service in Georgetown
If you’re looking for a really meaningful way to spend your Juneteenth, join the Black Georgetown Foundation on Wednesday from 11 am – 2 pm for a day of service and learning at DC’s oldest Black cemeteries: Mt. Zion and the Female Union Band Society Cemeteries. Active from 1808 to 1950, they served as a refuge on the Underground Railroad and are the last remaining burial grounds for individuals born into and who died in slavery. You’re invited to tour the cemeteries and then volunteer to clean up, pull invasive weeds, preserve grave markers, fill in holes, and beautify the landscape. A special Memory Stone rock painting activity has also been planned in honor of Nannie, a young girl who passed away in 1856 and whose grave was desecrated last Juneteenth.
